Okay, so we usually do a top 5 list but it was way too hard to only choose between 5 desserts so we rounded it up to 6. For the ultimate endorphine rush and taste-bud culture trip!
1) Romeu e Julieta –Romeo and Juliet is an amazing guava paste that you eat with cheese. Also called Goiabada, which is like a consistent marmalade made from guava, sugar and water. It is said to have a Bulgarian influence and is part of the Caipira cuisine – São Paulo.
2) Beijinho which means “little kiss” is a coconut version of the Brigadeiro. It is prepared with condensed milk, grated desiccated coconut, rolled over caster sugar or grated coconut and topped with a clove. It’s traditionally from the south; especially in the Rio Grande do Sul area.
3) Quindim is coconut flan made with egg yolks, sugar and coconut flakes. It originated in the Northeast part of Brazil, near the Amazons.
4) Doce de Leite is a typical South American dessert prepared by slowly heating sweetened milk to create a product that derives its taste from the Maillard reaction of the product, changing flavor and color. It’s traditionally from Latin America (countries like Uruguay, Chile etc.) and also famous for making churros.
